Maths - Measurement

The last four weeks in Rua we've been measuring here, measuring there, measuring, measuring everywhere.

We made jelly by carefully measuring 500ml of hot water and mixing it with jelly crystals. Mmm, maths is delicious!

Gus's mum, Renee helped us measure and record our height using our new wall chart. We also did this at the beginning of the year and we've discovered our maths skills have grown just like us. In Term 1 we struggled to read and write those three digit numbers - now we're experts!

Next we will look at how much we have grown from Term 1. We already know some people grow faster than others. As part of our Sexuality Education unit we are talking about growing and changing. It's normal for people to grow at different speeds.

We also learnt how to tell the time, to the hour and half hour, using an analog clock. Then we learnt about digital time and how 12:30 is the same as half past 12, or twelve thirty. (Because we are experts at counting in 5's we were able to transfer this knowledge to telling the time). Then we looked at the timetable for our Olympics Day with Paekakariki School and worked out what time different events started.

Finally we looked at absorption of different materials. We compared sponges, towelling and disposable nappies. We used our microscopes to look at the crystals inside disposable nappies. Then Gabriel's dad, Simon and Gus's mum, Renee, helped us measure how much water the same weight of each material absorbed. Wow! There is a big difference in how much water each material absorbs.

Kei te pehea koe? How are you feeling?

In Rua we've been learning to ask and answer the question "How are you feeling?" in Te Reo Maori.

We practised each morning as we answered the roll. Then in art, we drew emojis to depict different feelings. We chose colours that suited the different emotions.

Then we made our pictures into ebooks using the Book Creator app on the ipad. Students from Te Motu helped us. Thanks to Alice, Tallea, Billy, Beth and the other wonderful Te Motu students for showing us what to do.

CyberSafety - Part 2

We've been talking about ways to keep ourselves safe online.

First we talked about the rules we have at home. Here are some of our ideas.

Next we watched a youtube clip about keeping ourselves safe online. We talked about the issues raised in the clip. We then developed our own class set of rules. Here they are..

Watch the youtube clip again here: Lee and Kim's Adventure.

Now we know what to do, we can use our Chrome Books for more and more things. Here we are learning to use Google Docs to write, and to share our writing with others.

Note: Following on from our safety theme, we'll be looking at how to keep ourselves safe around trains. Rail Safety Week, 2016 (August 15th - August 21st).

CyberSafety

We've been having lots fun using our chromebooks for our learning (we now have 13, enough for half the class to use at once). The last few weeks of school I've been sending the children links to stories they can watch and listen to, maths and reading games they can play, and information they can use to research our inquiry topic. Its a great way to extend our learning. However with the fun comes the responsibility to keep ourselves safe. Today we looked at this clip on cyber-safety and discussed some of the messages. We also discussed what rules we have at home for using computers and the internet. We'll discuss this again tomorrow and over the next week.

You might also want to watch this at home and discuss it with you child.
