Writing - Dragonfly Stories

Our writing on Tuesday and Wednesday was inspired by this beautiful dragonfly Griffyn brought to school. We brainstormed WOW describing words then the children were free to write whatever they liked.

We also discovered we could all spell dragonfly. Drag - rhymes with bag so we could spell the first part. We know how to spell 'on' so thats the next part. And fly rhymes with my so we can spell that too. WOW!

Dragonfly, dragonfly, up, up, up
I love you dragonfly down, down, down
Oh no dragonfly here comes a dog
Dragonfly, fly, fly, fly

By Gabriel (Year 2)

A long, long time ago there lived a delicate dragonfly. It was flying around and it wanted to dive down into the water. He flapped his wings and flew across the water. The water was boiling. It nearly died. It quickly swam to shore. People came running because they had never seen a dragonfly, One of them picked him up. It was drying its wings. Once its wings were dry he took to the sky. He was so beautiful. He was stripey and colourful.

A long time ago - well last spring in fact - there lived a dragonfly. He lived in Pukerua Bay. One day he was flying around and all of a sudden the sky clouded with rain and the dragonfly said "what shall I do? I see a house up ahead." And luckily the door was open. The dragonfly whizzed into the house where he saw the TV was on. So he watched the TV and sat down.

Dragonflies fly really high. But wow look at this big dragonfly. My mum is scared of them. They are very delicate. There are many dragonflies around. There are lots in my garden.

What's in a Name?
Stella wondered, why are they called dragonflies? We looked on the internet but the internet didn't have very good answers. Do you know why?
